Blocking? Lots of questions?

Working on my IK Titled Duster.

Have back, left and right fronts done. Going to work on the sleeves next.

After the sleeves are done you sew together the back and the two fronts at the sides and shoulders, then pick up stitches for the “skirt”.

Do I block the back and the two fronts before I sew them together? I got the “Knitters Guide to Finishing Techniques” book and it says to block before and after seaming.

How do you block something? Those blocking boards are way expensive…do I need one?
