Hello knitters! I have a finishing question regarding blocking a collar that was knit on a sweater by picking up stitches at the neck, knitting a band and then folding it on itself and sewing it down. Actually, it’s the Avast sweater and I knit this sweater last year, but the collar just still isn’t falling right. (Is it too late to block a second/third time?)
So my question is this:
How do you block a collar to make it go nicely around the neck without any points or creases? Is there any obvious way of doing this?
Also, I messed up blocking it the first time and now it really doesn’t sit right at all. Can this be fixed? I’m a bit upset about it.
I don’t know about this particular collar, but it’s never too late to block again, just use your favorite method (soaking and drying, misting, wet towels etc.) and try again.
Oh sorry. Maybe I should have been more clear… what I meant by “how do you block the collar” was not “what method”, but “how to do maintain the shape when blocking so that when I wet the garment to dry it dries in the shape I want?”
If I’m understanding your question. . .
When letting something dry in the blocking process, you need to hold it in the shape you’re trying to achieve. There is a kit available with all sort of wires. They are much better than pins, because with the pins, you get pointy places. Some of the wires included are meant to bend in curves, just for the sort of thing like your collar. But you then do need to pin down the garment to a blocking board, in and around the wires, to hold it steady. Also-- be sure to leave it for a few days-- wool will appear to be dry when it really isn’t.
