Blocking a Cable Scarf?

It has been awhile since I’ve picked up the knitting needles but I am back on track again. I am about to complete a scarf that is knit out of Gedifra Highland Alpaca, 50% alpaca, 50% wool and is super bulky. I’m knitting on size 15 needles so the cables are large.

My question is: Do you block a piece that has cables? I’ve looked on the Internet (yet to delve into all my knitting books but suspect I will still not get a definitive answer to the question) and a few sites stated, no. This scarf will need something and am in a quandary as to what I should do. Is there a suggestion out there among all you accomplished knitters that have faced the cable/blocking issue?

Thanks and even though I haven’t been knitting for a couple of years I still check out the site from time to time. Glad it is still up and running as I have learned so much by reading other people’s posts over the past four years.

Yes! Always block any scarf, and especially lace or cables! Your work will look great before blocking, but it will look magnificent [I]after blocking! [/I]

Thank you so much for replying. Now, in your opinion would you mist and just let dry (after pinning to blocking board) or using a steam iron held above the work? This is for a gift and I want it to look good. Again, thanks.

Between the two blocking styles you mentioned…I would use the misting style. But, mist the tar out of it, and leave til bone dry. Can’t rush the drying part. Can hardly wait to see it!
