There is a blip like a purl bump or a leg from a swisted stitch happening at regular intervals. I think it is caused by an ssk but there are ssk on every row so why is it only blipping on these particular rows and what can i do to fix it? The rows seem to be 17, 21 , what is it about the ssk on these rows that is causing a weird stitch?
I’d like any thoughts or ideas
Oh i should say, i started repeateding rows 13 to 24 to see what was happening in this central part, that’s why the pattern isn’t complete in this section of swatch.
How are you working the ssk, slip knitwise, slip knitwise, k2tog tbl or something else?
One thing that helps ssk lie flatter is to gently tug on the second stitch once the sts are ready to come off the left needle. It pulls yarn from the first stitch and makes the ssk more like the opposite k2tog.
Pretty lace pattern!
The lace pattern is so nice, how generous of purlsoho to share it for free!
I’d like to translate it into a top.
The SSK, i was working it:
Slip knit wise, slip knit wise, knit those 2tog through the back loop.
Then I watched the video they have which showed it as:
Slip knit wise, slip purl wise, knit those 2tog through back loop.
This second way i thought was helping the blip but later realised it hadn’t.
The video also showed the P2togtbl as SSP
Slip purl wise, slip knit wise, slip both back to left needle and p2togtbl
This helped significantly with the look of the stitch and with the ease of working it as I’d been fighting to get into both sts tbl on this fine yarn and small needles.
I have done a lot of tugging and prodding on the swatch but the stitch seems incorrect rather than just poorly sized/aligned.
I will try the tug as I work the stitch as you recommend.
Is your ssk following a yo? If so, I wonder if doing a reverse yo would help because there’s less yarn involved. You’d need to work into the yo to not have it twisted on the next row. I decided one day to try skp for some reason and found it much easier to pull excess yarn into the second stitch and decided that for me skp looks better than ssk. Could your yarn be influencing the result? Some yarns just seem to have an aversion to a good looking ssk.
It might not even be the ssk
I have done another 13 to 24 with the tug. Though it was helping then this happened, the blip.
Not even sure what row this is
The top row on the needle is row 24
I was intrigued about that lace and find few different pins and on all pictures show that first left leaning stitch hava a same bump. Lace is nice but not worth it if makes you stressed. Knitting is to relax not stress.
Edited pictures to not show graph but it is same as on purl soho site
That’s so kind of you to do all that research and find and crop the images for me. Thank you.
So, it seems it is not something I’m necessarily doing wrong. I am intrigued that both left and right look raised on the decrease line but only the right has the strange kind of blip. The line on the left seems to run smoother.
I’m going to have another go with heavier yarn and bigger needles to see if I can figure out what is going on, i suspect I can’t because i dont know how to design or fix lace, but if i try the various dec options, the tug, the reverse yarn over, maybe i can find one which looks better.
No problem at all. What you think about trying with lace yarn not thicker? Maybe stitch is made for fluffy thin mohair yarn or similar, just suggesting. Maybe that bump need to be for texture?
Yes, you’re right. In a more squishy or fluffy yarn it doesn’t look so bad, it looks or acts worse in the slippery bamboo cotton, I also tried a swatch in a dk cotton just to see what was going on. It is odd that every row looks fine, no poblem then as I reach a certain row the blip appears a few rows below, even though that row looked fine when I worked it.
I am defeated by it as i just don’t like way it looks like an error in each repeat.
The yarn I want to use is fingering weight bamboo which has a nice sheen and looks nice in stockinette and some traveling stitches. I will probably leave this pattern for the time being and find a different lace pattern that works better for the yarn.
Looking at those pics, I think the lace isn’t supposed to be totally symmetrical. The “blip” changes the look on the right. You can see quite clearly in @ZKOhio’s 3rd example, the white one. The curved line on the right is much flatter up to the blip, then the twisted stitches appear. The line on the left is twisted stitches all the way.
I have same problem to find stitch for silky mix yarn/thread, it will wait for now. My hubby jokes about it, I keep getting yarn and stashing in cubbies . Got 4 heavier yarn and 5 DK/fingering kind waiting for me. Not sure yet what they will be, one is for blanket (maybe) others…mmmmm o well. It will be done eventually . Good luck with your project
There arent any twisted stitches in the pattern.
Ive found a few topsmon ravelry in this lace nd almost all have a blio on tn riht and not on the left. There is this one, 3 pictures down on this project, which is a good close up, it’s blipless!
Both left and riht curves are raised, a sort of relief, i dont have issue with that, but the blip which appears from nowhere on mine and apparently almkst everyone’s knitting doesn’t appear on this one project. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/staua/celina-summertop-w-iceflowers
I think it might have something to do with it being worked near a yarn over on the row below.
Logically if it can be acheived on the left then it can be aheived on the right too, but i think the yarn needs to be grippier, stickier or fluffier.
Thanks. I hav had this yarn a long time. The project i bought it for didn’t work out nicely at all but i do like the yarn a lot.
I have tried a few different lace patterns today but not found the right one yet.
You’re right, I should have said raised stitches, not twisted. Can you message the Raveler who did the blipless one? The original pattern photos of the Celina top are also blipless, so it must be possible! https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/celina-top
I suspect the blipless are down to the grip or texture in the yarn rather than a different method of making the pattern. I think I’ve tried every dec method possible.
It’s something most people either wouldn’t mind about or wouldn’t notice, for me though once I’ve seen it then it bothers me. I found myself repeatedly prodding and pulling those parts as though i could fix it with a little tug.
