Binding off?

Just wondering something about binding off. When I look at a store bought sweater I have, it looks like the bottom bind off is just a thread of yarn put through the knit loops. Imagine, instead of a circular needle, you have yarn and I think you get what I think I’m seeing.

Would it be a legitimate way to bind off if you thread your tapestry needle and run it through all the knit loops, then knot at the seam (if there is one)?

I don’t think so. The stitches would be able to slide back and forth across that yarn, and if it should snap you’d be in big trouble. There also wouldn’t be any kind of stretch to it.

I think a store bought/machine made sweater uses something similar to a kitchener or tubular bind off/cast on.

Ah ok. I didn’t think about the stretch.
