Binding off from Garter Stitch

I am knitting a jumper that finishes with 8 rows of garter stitch after the body being mostly stockinette. It’s knitted in the round so i have been purling throughout the 8 rows. I started binding off purl-wise, but it’s starting to curl inwards a bit more than i want. If i undo the bind off and re-do it knit-wise, would that help to achieve a flatter edge? Or is there another better way of doing it?

If you purled all 8 rounds, you actually did an inside-out (reverse) stockinette, which is why it’s curling inwards (stockinette curls, which is why you need a garter stitch section before binding off). You will need to take out the last 7 rounds (keep the first round of purling on the needles) and then alternate between knitting a round, then purling a round to get your garter border. After you bind that off, it should not curl.

Of course! Thank you now I realise what I did wrong. It’s obvious now. Now I have the gruelling task of undoing 7 rounds and carefully picking them up again! So how do you recommend binding off, knit wise I suppose?

I like to use the elastic bind-off, because I know it won’t be too tight. Here’s a video:

Great idea! Thank you I will do that. :grinning:
