Binding off a scarf

I have a question…I ribbed a scarf, beginning with Double Cast-On
aka Long-Tail Cast-On aka Continental Cast-On…i am finished and binded off, but one end looks totally different from the other…so which bind off do I use to match the cast one I used???

super thanks for all your help…I even made a hole in the scarf to loop it through…I am moving up in the knitting world

A regular cast on and a regular bind off do not match. The only way that I know of to make the two ends the same is to start with a provisional cast on at the beginning that can later be taken out to reveal live stitches so you can bind it off the same way that you do the other end.

Some one on this forum helped me with the same question! This site suggests the Sewn Bind-off (scroll down) as a pretty good match to the long-tail cast on:

I hope it works well for your scarf!

I used the 3-needle bind-off technique from the DIYNetwork.com show, “Knitty Gritty.” I really liked it for a scarf without fringe. The concept is to knit the first half, put the stitches off onto a holder, then knit the 2nd half. Then you bind off in the middle, using a 3rd needle to knit the 2 pieces together, binding off as you go. It makes a ridge in the middle, but that’s normally at the back of the neck where it isn’t noticed.

Here is a link to the illusion scarf, which was the show where I picked up this trick. I’m on a sloooow dialup, so I can’t get into the pdf files, but I know it’s in there. If you have trouble with it, PM me and I’ll go back and figure it out again and post detailed instructions.

I’ve also tried switching to smaller needles to bind off, knotting the scarf ends or gathering them in and adding a tassle. You could also crochet a border to hide the difference. Good old-fashioned fringe is the standard solution.

The i-cord cast on and bind off make a beautiful edge. Rebecca shows how in her blog with the pattern of the Touch of Whimsey Scarf

Here. Thank you Rebecca!

The link to the i-cord cast on is not working on Becca’s site

I noticed that, too, but if you scroll down, I think the instructions are at the bottom.
