Bind Off Questions

I’ve been working on this Cast-On / Bind-Off Necklace Pattern and discovered two things.

One, I have a tendency to bind off too tightly.

Two, I have no clue what I’m doing wrong with the last loop of the Bind-Off. I must admit I’m seriously looking at that Single Crochet Bind-off as an option.

Some background… I’m doing this continental. I k2 then pass the first K on the right needle over the 2nd K on the right needle (and off) leaving one stitch on the right needle and continue until all stitches are off the left needle and I have one remaining on the right needle.

As I understand it, I’m then supposed to pass the yarn through the loop on the right needle and take it off the needle which should (in theory create a tight BO), which I can then weave the tail in.

Only problem is… I pull the yarn through and it doesn’t tighten down. Doesnt seem to matter what I do, it will not tighten…

Did I miss a step in here somewhere? I checked Amy’s video and it showed getting it started but I didnt see her end the BO. And for that matter, are there any differences in the steps with the single crochet… it looks basically the same as a continental BO. The SC BO seems easy enough… except I still have the problem at the end with the final loop.

Here are a couple pics…

There’s a new video by Amy that shows a tiny project from start to finish. It shows binding off AND a nifty little technique for tightening up the last bind off stitch. You can find the video here.

i was just going to suggest the same thing. of course the bind off is towards the end of the video but i would definitely watch the whole thing if you have the time because she has a lot of cool little tips in it! i had several “duh!” moments watching it!

What I do at the end of a bind off is stretch the last loop, pull the yarn through as a loop, cut it at the loop end, slide out the yarn that’s connected to my skein, and then pull that end tight.

When you have that last loop on the needle, you should be able to pull on it so that it gets loosened. Then just cut a tail in your working yarn and pull it thru the big loop. I can’t think of a reason why it wouldn’t tighten down, sorry…

Also, I slip the first stitch to be bound off, it seems to look a little nicer.

Well it sounds like I’m doing the process correctly… even if the tension is off. Am I understanding this correctly?

On your bottom picture, see that yarn that’s lying over on the left? Pull that through the big loop. That should tighten up, no?

Yes, are you sure you’re pulling your working yarn through?

That yarn on the left is actually part of that big loop.

And yes, Sara, I’m pretty sure (about 95%) I’m pulling the working yarn through, which is why this has been puzzling the heck out of me.

Yes, that’s what I mean. Thread that through the big loop and pull.

You know, it looks right from the picture. That last stitch is just like finishing off in crochet and it’s apparent that you understand what it’s supposed to do…I think you’ll have to ask for some live help at your knitting group tonight.

I went to my knitting group and found out what I was doing wrong with that Bind-Off. Which means I created the first link for the two knitted necklaces that I will be giving to my daughters at some point.

That’s is so touching!
