Bind off confusion

The pattern is Pullover Superkid Seta Design 57 - Filati Journa 68, and I’m making size 40/42. I think I posted the pullover in Whatcha Knitting for February.

I’m including the part of the pattern where I have to bind off to shape the shoulders and neck and a photo of what the shoulder line should look like.
Does it mean, for size 40/42, I first bind off 5 stitches 5 times at each shoulder edge, then BO 5 st 2 times at each shoulder edge, and then BO 6 st at each shoulder edge 4 times? The backslashes and commas are confusing me. I just want verification before proceeding.

That can’t be right. Adding the bind offs together totals 118 stitches and my cast on was 106 stitches.

Not the most straightforward pattern to read, I agree. For 40/42, the second size, bind off 5sts 2 times and then 6sts 4 times. That’s a total of 34sts bound off at the same time as the neck shaping is going on.

The neck bind offs are 20sts at the center, 4sts each neck edge for a total of 8sts, 5sts each neck edge for a total of 10sts. (38sts in all at the neck).
34sts at each shoulder plus 38sts at the neck totals 106sts.

Thank you so much. You have a gift of interpreting patterns.

Now your numbers question is resolved, you might consider short row shoulder shaping. You can leave the stitches live for a three needle bind off or bind them off then seam the shoulders. I actually followed step bind off instructions one time.

I’d love not dealing with the “stairs” but I wouldn’t know how to transfer those numbers to short rows.

Maybe it’s in the video, but it’s my bedtime and I’ll watch it tomorrow. Thank you for your reply.

If you wish to try it and need help, ask. I’m useless on technical stuff but lots of help is to be had here.

That’s a wonderful suggestion from GG for a very neat shoulder. The video indeed will show you how to work the numbers which is easier than you might think. Good luck with this finishing!

That’s a great video. I’m going to try her short row technique. Thank you salmonmac and gg for all your help!

You’ll love it, I bet. Like I said above I did a stepped bind off exactly once. Neat seaming was a pipe dream. It was my first real project and doing something different was the biggest lesson I learned.

I’m on the sleeve of the same sweater, Superkid Seta Design 57 Lana Grossa.
I’m having a heck of a time with the increases. I haven’t knitted any of the increase section yet, I’m just writing the increases on paper. Same problem as before: parentheses, slashes, commas. I don’t know where to read my size, which is 40/42. The directions say 72 stitches; I have to assume they mean 72 stitches increased. On paper, I have 86 stitches increased.
Can you interpret my increases for my size?

Its the second size i think, from looking at previous posts.
Cast on 50 sts
Work rib
Increase 10 evenly, 60 sts
Stockinette
Increase 1 st each end of 13th row (60+2=62)
Then every alt 16th and 14th row 5 times (62+10=72)

First increase is row 13
Then rows 29, 43, 59, 73, 89
Work even to measurement

I hope this helps

Thank you for your help.
If I would have proceeded to knit the way I figured it out on paper, my sleeve would have been way too wide and would have reached my knees!

It might make it easier for you to keep track if you go through and mark your size–circle the number with a pencil, maybe? I know you might think “oh, it’s the first inside the parentheses, I’ll remember”, but it just makes it easier to scan a line and see which numbers apply to you.

Thank you for your response.

Actually, it’s finding which increases apply to my size that gave me problems. All those slashes and parentheses and wording are confusing to me. After Creations response, I wrote it out correctly.
