Big Head, Small Neck

Nightmare! Knitted gorgeous top down sweater for my granddaughter. All measurements taken before apart from the circumference of her head! Who would? Anyhow the darned thing won’t go over her head. I don’t cast on tightly and haven’t had this problem before. As things stand, is the only way to resolve this to undo the whole thing! I’m lying down in a darkened room going la la la.

I shall la la la with you.
Gutted for you, what a blow!

I do not think the only answer is necessarily to undo all but surgery will depend on the construction and how much it needs changing. For instance, although you say you don’t cast on tightly, if the problem is the cast in edge and not the neck band then a relatively light surgery could solve the problem.

When you return to the light some investigation and measurements needed. Does the neck band fit the neck? How much of the sweater doesn’t fit and how much bigger does it need to be? What sort of neck and shaping construction does it have?
Surgery may turn out to be too dramatic for you to want to do, or you may enjoy the challenge and learning different methods of fixing - all personal choices.

For now, breath
La la la…

Thank you, Im waiting for the offending garment to be returned. Then I can have a proper look. It might be the band and not the actual neck. Praying now and clutching at straws. Lol. On this pattern you only cast on some of the stitches to begin with then there is a cast on at each end of the row before joining the round. Will get back to you. Thank you for your answer.

I hope it is salvageable in some way.
I think once you have it back post a pic, a pattern link and the measurements and hopefully we can all come together with ideas for you.
Some things comes to mind, quite drastic some of them, but you’ll be able to keep something I’m sure.

Oh ugh, that is my worst nightmare and leads to lots of child and baby cardigans.
You may be able to take out some of the neckband and re-knit it on a larger needle or redesign the band to a larger rolled band in stockinette. It’s not simple to take out from the cast on edge unless you cut but it can be done.
This tutorial isn’t directly applicable but it gives you an idea of one possibility.

What is the name and designer of your pattern?

It’s the fabulous Shannon Dunbabin, Cascade 220 superwash top down kids sweater. I’ve knitted 2 for grandsons no problem. This was a larger size 30" for granddaughter.

Love this little sweater. Thank you for the link. I’ve added it to favorites.
Since you pick up sts for the neckband, you should be able to take those sts out. See if the neck is then stretchier. If so, very loosely pick up sts, more than originally and perhaps just bind off on the next row.

Cunning plan, everything crossed. Xx Thankyou. I love this sweater too.

Let us know how it’s going. Everything else crossed!

Waiting on delivery. I smelt a rat when I posted said sweater and heard nothing from Mum. Pushed and got random " lovely colours" remarks etc. Saw my beloved granddaughter at Christmas, said own up what’s up. Errrm well Granma . …
Enough said. Post it back toot sweet

I looked at your pattern and the neck is garter st. and the neck is picked when the sweater is finished.
Therefore you should only have to take off the neck band and re-knit it.
It may be that only your bind off is too tight.
