Best way to sew a zipper to piece knit in bulky yarn?

I will be adding a zipper to my cardi soon, and I’m already anticipating problems. :eyes:

I would think that using a sewing machine would be the most durable way to attach a zipper, but has anyone tried this with an item knit in bulky yarn? Any trouble with the yarn getting caught in the teeth of the sewing machine and any ideas on how to fix it?

Any tips or help you can give would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve put zippers into bulky sweaters before and they worked very well and were durable. I stitch them in by hand and stitch over the top and bottom areas of zipper attachment to reinforce it. The bottom seems to take the most wear and tear, but I’ve never had to re-sew one yet! I don’t have a sewing machine so I don’t know if that will work.
