Would love to know what other knitters find to be the best method for the MOST PROFESSIONAL-LOOKING result!
I am not afraid to try new techniques. In fact, I just taught myself the Kitchener grafting method and used it successfully on this particular sweater. Hope to finish the rest of the assembly as neatly!
Mattress stitch is usually the best choice, but it can depend on the pattern. Shoulders are often done with 3 needle bind off, but can be done mattress stitch as well. There are videos of the techniques in our video section.
In addition to what Jan said (I ‘second’ her post)…
…another BEST WAY to assemble a sweater is: BLOCK ALL THE PIECES first. Especially if you are looking for the most professional-looking finished product possible!
Hey ArtLady, didn’t you once say you use something other than yarn to join? If so, could you repeat your method? That seemed to make a lot of sense since the joining yarn makes the seam even bulkier. Thanks!!
Yes, I do frequently use DMC Pearl Cotton, size 5, for all my seaming! It is strong and slick as a whistle! So easy to see, so easy to pull up the mattress ‘laces’! So easy to back stitch into the seam to ‘secure’ the end! And, so easy to yank out if you need to! And, it’s cheap, too!
