Beret in Sunset-help, please!

Hi all!!!

Just trying to understand this pattern. Here is the pattern part that has me confused:
Cast on 82 st
Uneven rows: ks, knit until last st, ks
Even rows: ks, k1, p1, repeat - until last st, ks
Repeat row 1 & 2 for 18 rows
Continue in st st & increase on 1st row:
ks, k1 f&b, repeat - until last st, ks do I increase on every row until
I reach that 4th row and make it moss stitch?
For additional effect, knit hat in the following moss pattern on ea 4th row from the back: Row 4: ks, p1, k1, p1, p1, repeat - until last st, ks
Row 8: ks, p1, p1, p1, k1, repeat until last st, ks what do I do for rows 5-7?
Continue like this for 14 rows, then I will increase on ever row except the 4th row until I get to 14 rows?
then start decreases (decreases are made on every 4th row from the back on the non moss knitted rows):
ks, p10, p2tog, repeat - until last st, ks
Next time: ks, p9, p2tog, repeat - until last st, ks
Next time: ks, p8, p2tog, repeat - until last st, ks a.s.o until 12 st remain
Break yarn and pull through remaining st
Seam side seam and weave in all loose ends

Sorry- my questions were supposed to be in red but it didn’t work. Question is: when it says to knit st st and increase and do miss stitch every 4th row, do I increase until that 4 row and then increase until I get to 14 rows?

(decreases are made on every 4th row from the back on the non moss knitted rows):
ks, p10, p2tog, repeat - until last st, ks
Next time: ks, p9, p2tog, repeat - until last st, ks
Next time: ks, p8, p2tog, repeat - until last st, ks a.s.o until 12

What does this mean? 4th row from the back?
Thanks!!!

What you do is work in moss stitch for 18 rows, then increase on the next row, changing to stockinette stitch that would be the first row of stockinette.

From the back’ means on the WS row, the ‘back’ row. It says you can do the 4th row in moss stitch as well as row 8, but the rest of the rows would still be stockinette. ’ Do this for 18 rows, the only increase is on row 1 - rows 4, 8, and 12 can be done in the moss stitch pattern. You can also just work in plain stotckinette stitch for 14 rows.

The decs are made on the backside/WS rows every 4th row where you don’t do in moss stitch.

I think you’re mangling and/or leaving out a lot of the instructions though, so is there a way to link to the pattern, or say which one it is? That way we can look at it or a picture and make sure we’re reading it correctly.

The pattern is Beret in Sunset by Ann Linderhjem

Thanks!!! I think what you said is that I increase only on the 1st row of stockinette and every 4th row I make it a moss stitch? Do the 14 rows I am to knit are counting the previous 8? That’s before I start decreasing.
Thanks again!

When it says ks, k1 f&b repeat - until last st, ks
Does this mean I increase on every stitch except first and last stitch?

Thanks for the link - it’s free and that helps.

You only increase on row 1. That will drastically increase the sts, from 82 to 123 or something. Then work all in stockinette (knit on RS, purl on WS) for 14 rows. During that 14 rows you can knit every 4th row in moss stitch as written out on rows 4 and 8, and row 12 would also be done like this. But you can make all the rows stockinette.

Row 14 starts the decreases and they’re done on the 4th rows
that are not done in moss stitch. So that’s rows 14, 18, 22, and 26 if you need to. In the meantime, continue with the moss stitch if you want on rows 16, 20, and 24.

This is translated from the Swedish so it’s not as clear as if it had been in english in the first place. European patterns often translate the WS rows as ‘back’ rows since they’re on the back of the item.

The pattern says ks, k1 f&b repeat until last stitch, ks. So, does this mean I increase in every stitch or every other stitch, knit 1 and then knit 1 front and back. I started with 82 if I increase in every stitch it will be 160 stitches, if its every other then it will be 120 stitches. I finished one beret where I increased every stitch but not sure if that’s what it’s supposed to look like, I liked it but I’m not sure it was meant to be so big and slouchy. Thanks, I’m working on my 2nd one:)

The repeat should be all the stitches between the asterisks. So in this case you would repeat kf&b (knit one stitch front and back) all across the row. That would be an increase in every stitch except the first and the last. If you’d prefer a less full beret, just do fewer increases. You can adjust it as you like.

Yes, sorry, I was wrong in my earlier post, my eyes put an extra k1 in there. You do increase in every stitch except at the ends, so you’ll double your stitch count to about 162. If that’s going to be more stitches than you want, you can just do the inc in every other stitch though.
