Beginner Q re: stockinette

Hi, When a pattern says “work 2 rows in stockinette stich”, does it mean work one knit and then one purl, or does it mean to do that twice? i.e. is a stockinette row the knit row AND the purl row? Or is it that you knit the number of rows but just alternate kintting and purling?
Thanks!

It means to just knit one row and purl one row.

Each trip across the needle is just one row Even if a stitch pattern has 8 rows in it, sometimes you’ll be told to work 3 rows of the sts pattern. If you knit in the round, stockinette is knit every row because you don’t turn to work on the purl side.
