Beginner- Knitting blankets questions

Im a new knitter and I want to make blankets but i have a question. if the pattern calls to cast on 97, how do you fit 97 on the needles? Lol … i’ve only taken once class and it didnt really cover stuff like this. I know there is a way to do it but none of the books i have shows this information.

Usually blankets are knit with a circular needle, the cord holds lots more sts than a straight needle and you can use them to knit flat the same way.
