Beginner knitter needs help

I am starting up my cable scarf project from LAST winter and somehow the cables that I knit last year are on 1 side of my scarf and the cables I am knitting this year are on the other side. LOL. I keep unraveling my knitting and restarting, but this keeps happening. Any idea what the heck I am doing wrong? Thanks!

Do you mean that they’re on the wrong side of the scarf, or are they leaning the wrong way?

Cables usually involve something that is very akin to ribbing. The cables are done with knit stitches (on the right side, so St st) and at the sides of the cables are reverse St st, the back side of the St st, so purl bumps.) Cables are almost always crossed on the right side, where the smooth side of the St st is. Put all that together and see if you can figure it out. Make sure your smooth and not smooth areas line up with each other, if not take it out to where it looks right and start from there making sure they do line up and then cross on the smooth side of the cable sections. I hope that helps.

On the wrong side of the scarf, if you can believe it!

Look at the scarf. On the side where the cables are purl bumps work a row to knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you.

When you flip it over, you’ll be on the right side and that’s where you’ll work the cables.

I purled the purls and knitted the knits…it worked!! Thank you SO much!

You may be starting on the wrong row. You would always do the cross sts on the RS rows, the WS rows and the RS rows that don’t have crossed sts are done like ribbing - knit the knits and purl the purls.
