Beginner knitter needs help with pattern armhole shaping.

Hi, I’m a beginner knitter and just not sure how to interpret the pattern for a child’s wrap cardigan when it comes to shaping the armhole. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Shape Armhole at beg of WS rows as for Right Front, AT SAME TIME, cont to dec for Front edge every RS row. Work straight at armhole edge, cont to shape Front edge until 8 (9, 71, 13) sts rem for shoulder.
What does this mean? TIA

Hello
Can you tell us which pattern name you are making and which size (first, second third etc) please?

Have you already completed the right armhole? There may be part of the pattern earlier with a subtitle “shape armhole” and this was for the right front (right as the wrap would be worn), the instructions for the left armhole are to be worked like the right armhole, perhaps with some mirroring.

If you are able to find the lines for the right armhole you can post a line or two from the pattern and we can help you mirror it.

Basically you will work each end of the row with, or without, decreases to make the shape of the armhole at one end of the row and the shape for the wrap or neck edge at the other end of the row.
It can help to write down the row numbers for shaping when you have 2 things to do “at the same time” to keep track of them.

This is the left front, the pattern is called kids collection K522 wrap cardigan if that helps. Doing second size.
LEFT FRONT
Shape Armhole
NR (RS) - Cast off 2 (3, 3, 4) sts,k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
P 1 row straight.
NR (RS) - K1, skp, k to last 3sts, k2tog, k1.
P 1 row straight.
Rep last 2 rows 3 times more.
Keeping Front edge shapingcorrect every RS row, dec 1 st for armhole every other RS row twice.
Work straight at armhole edge, cont to shape Front edge until8 (9, 11, 13) sts rem for shoulder.

Sorry I should note, I have done the left front and now doing the right front.

Perhaps this one

You will shape one end for the armhole and one end for the front edge.
The reason it says to cast off on the WS (wrong side - the inside in the wrap) is because casting off has to be done at the beginning of a row. As you are doing the opposite armhole the only way to cast off is on the wrong side. It looks like plain stocking stitch knit on the right side, purl on the wrong side. If you want to fully match up you can do your castoffs purlwise at the beginning of the wrong side row.

When you turn to the right side you can do the decreases as before as they will mirror correctly.
So
WS cast off 3, work to end
RS k1, dec, knit to last 3, dec, k1
Repeat those 2 rows 3 more times
Then continue to decrease on front edge every RS row but at armhole due every other RS row, twice.
Then continue to shape front edge until 9 sts remain but work the arm edge straight without decreases.

Does this make sense?
It should look like the left side and work the same way, the only real difference is the cast off being on the wrong side.

Ok, think I’ve got it. Thank you so much for your help

You’re welcome.
If you get stuck on it again though don’t hesitate to ask.

We’d love to see a photo of your finished wrap when you’re finished.
