Beginner Knitter Mistake?

I am a beginner knitter. I’m doing a project in stockinette. This has happened a couple of times and I can’t figure out what’s causing it or how to fix it. Can anyone help? Thank you!!

Hi. This is an incomplete stitch. Rather than try to explain I’ll give you a video link and let Rox do the heavy lifting. lol

This happens. I’ve had to fix several incomplete stitches myself today.

Perfect! Thank you so much! I’m definitely a beginner and have no clue what I’m doing. I don’t know anyone that knits to ask questions, so I really appreciate your help!

I learned to knit from a book and then online and this site was a godsend. You Tube videos can be great. I particularly like those by Roxanne Richardson and Suzanne Bryan. I dislike the ones that take a long time to get to the down and dirty, what do I need to do part and the ones where the nails are so distracting I have a hard time watching the actual knitting. You’ll find your faves. Having another knitter to talk with and learn from in person would be nice but I’ve never had that opportunity either. Don’t let it stop you. Don’t be daunted by those who insist you must take classes. If you can take classes and want to, great. If there are none available or you choose not to then that’s great too.

Now you understand and can fix the problem, here’s what I’d do. When I get back to that stitch on the next row I’d make sure the yarn loop is on the purl side and poke my needle tip through the stitch on the needle from back to front, grab the loop and pull it through. If the yarn doesn’t play nice I’d turn the work, and do it from the other side. Most mistakes are fixable though there are those that will require you to frog. I’ve read that the biggest difference between a new knitter and an experienced knitter is how many mistakes they’ve made and learning to fix them.

You do need expert help. You need to form a community of knitters. Working alone is so very lonely, and very frustrating!! There are knitters all around you – you just need to look for them. They look like anyone else, so you need to watch very, very closely! They are there!

Check with your LYS – that is the first place, since they know everything going on in the knitting world. Ask at your community centre, the library, a local church, women’s group?, anywhere… they are there, but are very well-hidden. You really must search for them.

If all else fails, put up a notice at the grocery store bulletin board saying you have formed a knitting group. See who comes to it. You may have to host, or you may rotate… or find a room in the library or community centre… and you will have your knitting community!!

Well look here,we have a community of knitters, all willing to help if and when we can!
Not everyone lives near to others, some of us are housebound, some of us just prefer the internet .
There are NO knitting police.

When I was learning there were no knitting groups and no yarn stores in my area. I struggled with books and magazines. Spent an enormous amount of time figuring things out. It was worth it though. Thank goodness that today’s new knitters can ask their questions from the nice people on this site without having to feel embarrassed.

Not everybody can do that. I work full time and have a disabled husband who needs looking after when I get home. Whatever I want to know I watch YouTube videos (particularly Roxanne Richardson and Very Pink Knits) or come to a forum such as this.
