Hi everybody sorry ive been away. Im not too sure if anyone knits in my community. im shy! so i dont know many of the neighbours only a couple. I have continued learning to knit and ive recently started on a hat. Ive completed it to the last part which is to sew it up. im also having a problem on another part which is:
if you have a look on the left there are the excess yarn from changing the yarn to another colour. how do i get rid of it? i did this on my other scarf, changing yarn, tied it but it worked to no avail and it slipped and it created more havoc. what is the solution to this?
Those are the loose ends from the yarns, yes? You’ll need to weave them in on the wrong side. A tip for next time: You can carry the yarn not in use up the side and avoid a lot of ends. Carrying Yarn Up the Side - Stripes, Colorwork
Hi ive finally learned how to weave i think anyway! took a bit of time.
another curious question:
ive bought this book and it tells me to use thumb method stitch. Does the type of stitch you put on matter? a stitch is a stitch? dont they just yield same results? I use the long tail method i believe.
also big thanks to this community of knitters. i feel ive learned much from the kind people here. it is great; this forum of active knitters who are very willing to help.
ah yeah ive forgot to mention, is there a method to seam? with my previous hat i just seamed it into any random stitch as i tried watching some videos but the knit patterns were different to mine and i just couldnt do it. Also with my pom pom it came loose. any great videos on seaming out there?
Have you got a knitter’s yarn needle? It looks like a sewing needle but is bigger.
You don’t thread it like a thread needle, you put the yarn over the shank of the needle, pinch it between your thumb and forefinger, pull the needle away then put the stiffened end of the yarn through the eye (the hole in the needle).
I use running stitch or back stitch on stocking stitch so there is a little seam and oversewing on ribbing so there is no seam.
I hope that I understood your question correctly to answer it.
When I make a pompom I leave long ends when I make it (from when I tie around the centre) then use these to sew the pompom to the hat. Use a knitter’s yarn needle again for this.
I leave long ends on the top of the hat as well and use them too.
So I sew the pompom to the hat and the hat to the pompom as it were.
Please don’t be shy about joining a knitting circle. We knitters are very nice people!
Tell yourself you can manage to go once and if you don’t like it you never have to go again. You do have the courage for that Martin - I am sure.
I really think you would enjoy your knitting more if you didn’t struggle so much. An experienced pair of hands could be a constant help to you.
And be careful with your pompom - you don’t want to lose it at an inconvenient moment!
There are more ways to cast on than you can shake a stick at. Some are stretchy, some are firm, some are decorative. Which one you use depends upon what you’re making and your preference. Some patterns specify a cast on and others don’t. If there is a reason to use the one specified then the quality (stretchy for hats and things for example) of it should be taken into consideration. For most things the long tail cast on is fine. It can be made stretchier by leaving space between the stitches on the needle. It can be made looser by casting onto a larger needle or two needles held together (this is a PITA for me so I never do it). If you look up cast ons you’ll find enough to boggle your mind for a long, long time.
Thumb method cast on can refer to a way of doing a long tail CO or to backward loop cast on which isn’t usually the best for starting projects and maybe others. There are videos for them too.
Seaming is another area with a number of methods. Mattress stitch (youtube has tons of videos) is the most commonly used and works well for many things including hats.
How did you attach the pom pom? Did you pull the yarn ends through to the inside and knot them? You can knot them again more securely and weave in the ends. It should hold for you.
This is probably enough for you to be thinking about now. I’ll stop.
