Hi,
I’m knitting a child’s sweater and it gives you an option to do an elevation at back of neck. But the instructions on the pattern make no sense to me.
I’m knitting in the round and currently have 84sts on my needles.
The instructions are as follows
Place marker mid front (after 42sts)
Knit until 10sts left before marker
Turn, tighten strand and purl until 10sts left on other side
Turn, tighten strand and knit until 18sts left, turn, tighten strand and purl to 18sts left on other side. (I’m ok to this bit)
Continue by working 8 stitches less each time you turn, 2 more times each side.
Turn, tighten strand and knit to mid back.
To my mind, this is going nearly all the way round, just for the back elevation.
I can skip the elevation bit so back and front are the same, back having done it once already like this, I thought it might be nicer to add the elevation but I’m so confused by this.
The pattern is Little Red Nose by Drops Designs
Any advice would be much appreciated
Thank you for reading this.
Back of neck elevation
You’re correct, the knit short rows are going almost all the way around to the front. That’s done so that you have a gradual rise at the back of the neck rather than an abrupt increase in rows. Most of the increased rows will be at the back but these will become more a part of the sweater because of the gradual way the short rows are worked.
The short rows don’t have to be done but they do give a better fit to the sweater without pulling at the front neck.
Thank you - it didn’t really make sense to me but now I understand what you mean. I did the smallest size without the elevation but doing 3 more in bigger sizes so thought it would look nicer. But as long as I’m not reading in wrong, and your comments have made me realise that it’s ok - I’ll give it a go. Thank you again
Oh wow, these are going to look adorable. You have your knitting work cut out for you!
I have 7 grandkids…. only planning on making these for the youngest 4 - rather hoping the older 3 are beyond Christmas jumpers now! you never know tho - I could be making 7!!!
I have nothing but admiration for you!
Never too old for Xmas jumpers - the other 3 are going to be putting their orders in!!!
How lovely to be making a bunch of these for your grandchildren, just adorable.
Looks very nice! Can’t wait to see this little sweater.
