I took up knitting over the weekend on a whim and fell in love instantly. This morning I found out that a close family friend is pregnant. I want to make her a baby’s blanket.
I have two concerns. The first is I want her to be able to really use it, not just have it for decoration. Can anyone recommend the proper yarn? Something hypoallergenic that would shed or pill to much, so its safe? And maybe machine washable? I’m not sure if I’m asking too much, but I’m aiming for practical.
The other thing is, I only know the knit stitch right now, but I have at least eight months, so I was wondering about simple decorative touches I could learn, or would it be stronger if I just stuck to basics.
Any advice or commentary would be much appreciated.
I like Caron Simply Soft for baby items. It’s machine washable/dryable, soft, and easy to find at Walmart/AC Moore/Joann Fabrics/Michaels.
There are tons of patterns that will use only garter stitch, which is all knit. I think garter stitch is under-rated - it’s quite elegant on it’s own. If you’re up to learning some new skills, some yarn overs and knit 2 togethers wll add rows of lacy holes. If you learn how to pick up stitches you could do a nice log cabin garter stitch blanket. And you have plenty of time to master the purl stitch which will give you even more choices.
