Baby sweater

I am expecting my first baby and wanted to make her a sweater. This is the link to the pattern I want to use:

http://www.knittingonthenet.com/patterns/babysweragcard2.htm

I want to make the 6 to 9 months size. The yarn I want to use is a baby cashmere with a gauge: 28 st/4 inches 3.25 mm (US 3)

Will this yarn work even if I use size 4 and 5 needles as per the sweater instructions?

Thx

If you can get gauge with a yarn…it will work. You have to keep foolin with it…changing needles till you get gauge. And when you get gauge you need to decide if you like the way its knitted up at that gauge.
If at that point you dont like it, then no, it wont work. LOL If you do…then Yes, It will work.

In your case it looks to me like you will have to go up a couple of needle sizes to get the 22.5 sts=4" the pattern wants…have you tried to get gauge on the US 5? If not, try it and see what you get. You may be good to go with it.
but that looks like alot of work at such a small gauge.
Heres the baby sweater I make for all the babies that arrive in my life. I knit it with “caron simply soft” you can throw that in the wash. and its knit on larger needles.

Its rare that I use the suggested yarn on a pattern. Especially when they suggest a yarn thats WAY too expensive for me, so i substitute.

Melissa ,I love the pattern you use for your baby sweater and love even more your page on the sweater. Your demonstration and pictures and tips are so helpful . You did such a wonderful job with detailing the pattern for others , thank you. I bookmarked your page for later use.

I recently bought the book’ The knitter’s handy book of Patterns’ by Ann Budd on basic design in multiple sizes & gauges. The instructions for the projects in the book are presented in chart form with the sizes from smallest to largest in columns and the gauge in stitches per inch in rows. Simply find your gauge along the left margin of the chart and follow across the row to the size you want to make. Kind of like a book for knitting dummies, like myself.

The projects are Mittens,Gloves,Hats,Tams, Scarves, Socks, Vest, and Sweaters.

I bought it used off of Amazon for $7

Thx Nana,

That book sounds like something of great help to me… I will cheeck it out and buy it soon !!!

You might also be able to find it at your library.

Melissa, I loved the pattern on thr blog and I think I will start with that. It looks easy enough for a beginner like me.

I had a few doubts though. At the end of the blog there are several needle sizes and the yarns to use with each size. I am guessing a new born finished chest size will be 18 inches. Am I right? It says to use a size 7 needle and Hobby Lobby Sweet Delight Baby yarn. Is it ok to substitute with the Lion Brand Baby Soft or the Bernat Softee Baby yarn. Will I need to change the needle size for any of these two yarns? And will I need to use the Lion or Bernat yarn double stranded?

Also in the blog it says that she used a cable cast on in the beginning of this sweater and this adds one additional row of knitting. Is that in reference to row 1 which starts at the neck??

Thx
Gayatri

The sweet delight is a thin yarn, not sure how it compares to the other, but you should be okay using the size 7s. Even if it’s a little large, it’ll fit later.

I usually make or buy baby clothes in at least a 6 mo size which most babies can wear by about 3 mo old. Newborn sizes only fit for a couple weeks, if then especially if it’s a large baby.

You should try to get gauge with whatever yarn your using…i just made one for a 4mo old baby and used the 17st/21.5 rows size.(second picture) I wasnt able to use the size 9 needle tho…wound up with a US10, using Caron Simply Soft, (cuz thats what i had in my stash…LOL) . It was big on the baby and thats the way i wanted it. But thats MY gauge…you need to find your gauge. But thats the one I usually do for newish babys. I would do a gauge swatch with both yarns and see where it needs tweeking…

The cable cast on needs a purl row to get the “purty” side to the RS that is what she is reffering to. I also use the cable cast on for these and start out with a purl row before begining the pattern. I think the cable cast on is pretty tho…babys stuff needs purty…LOL

Ive made a few of these…so if you need any help, let me know.

So I do a cable cast on, then a purl row and then start with the knit row as per the pattern ? And do I do this at the neck edge since the instructions start from there?

Also how do I decrease the stitches for a smaller size?

Thx

Yep:thumbsup:

The pattern is done the same way with all sizes. The way the sizes change is the size needle you use. But the pattern stitches ect… stays the same.

I hope that made sence. And i hope i understood your question.
