Baby sweater into bunting, sleeper

I would like to change an infant sweater pattern into an infant sleeper. Should I use a provisional cast on, add on 6 inches or so and then decrease about 2 inches at each end at the bottom of the sweater. My baby is due in late March. Thanks for any suggestions

Sounds like a good idea. Where would the provisional cast on be?

I would put the provisional cast on at the bottom. Then knit down to her feet. I am kind of superstitious about completing anything before the baby is born but almost done is OK with me
