Baby Hat pattern help, please!

Hi,
I am teaching myself to knit, and came across a pattern I really liked.

http://www.allaboutyou.com/craft/Knitting-pattern-flower-baby-hat/v1

In the second row, it says:
K1, yf, * k5, slip the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th sts over the first st, yf; rep from * to last st, k1.

How do I slip these stitches over the 1st one if they are all already on the right needle??

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to Knitting Help!

Take the stitches one at a time up and over that stitch. The first one or two should be pretty easy, but the others will be harder to do w/o sliding the first stitch off. When I’ve had to do something like this I kind of squish the stitches together and lift the stitch to slip up while grabbing the first stitch underneath it with my thumbnail to keep it from going and then slide the stitch off. It’s going to be kind of awkward and I don’t know of any tricks, but hopefully someone else can give you an idea, too.

That’s quite an adventurous project for a new knitter. You’ll learn a lot.

The ‘1st st’ isn’t the one you knit first, but the one that’s closest to the tip. So you start with the next one, slip it over, then the next, then the next…

I have been trying this stitch for days now and I’m so glad I finally found the answer. The second reply is correct and it looks great!! Thank you!
