i am working on a new baby Booties patter and i don’t understand it
here is what it says

Next Row
K2 K18 K2tog 4 times K18 K2
K2 Purl to the last 2 st K2
K2 K16 K2tog 4 times K16 K2
K2 Purl to the last 2 st K2
then its says
Continue working using these 2 rows until 14 st Remain on each side to Knit

i don’t understand the 4 times
please help me

I believe that it is k2tog 4 times or K2tog, k2tog, k2tog, k2tog
Stitch count
K2 = 2
k18= 18
K2tog 4 time = 8
K18 = 18
K2 = 2
total stitches = 48

cacunn has got to be right about what is repeated, but the pattern is not very well written. You cannot repeat (I just noticed it doesn’t say “repeat” the rows, but "continue working using these 2 rows) those 2 rows until 14 sts remain (besides there are 4 rows given) but you can’t repeat the first one. There are not enough stitches anymore to do that. What they mean (evidently) is to keep working in the same manner until you have 14 sts on each side to knit. I think they are not considering the 2 stitches on each side that are kept in garter stitch when they say “until 14 sts remain on each side to knit”.
I think you only need to repeat the manner you have been doing it one more time to have 14 on each side (omitting the garter), so why didn’t they just say so.
So after you do the rows as given the next row would be:
K2, k14, (K2tog) 4 times, k14, k2.
i dont know it a very old pattern my aunt gave me the pattern

The two rows it refers to are the 2 previous ones - the one with decrease 4 times and the k2, purl, k2 row. When you do the dec rows you’re going to have one less sts between the k2tog, so the next row would be ‘k2, (k15, k2tog) 4 times, k2’ then the WS row, then ‘k2 (k14, k2tog) 4 time, k2’ and so on.
then why would not say after k2 k18 k2tog 4 time k2
k2 purl k2 then why would it go k 2 k 16 k2tog 4 time k2 and not say k2 k 17 k2tog 4 time k2
Because it’s shorter to say repeat the rows than to spell out each row with less sts between the decs. And because there’s decreases on those rows, it’s logical that there’s one less stitch there.
Btw, you seem to be adding sts in your examples, not taking them out.

Fine, do the WS row - k2, p across, k2 -then another dec row - k2, k15, k2tog 4times, k2 and another WS Row.
Do you have a picture of a finished one? If we can take a look at it, then we can see what’s going on. As Merigold said above, it’s not very clearly written. Or maybe ask your aunt if she’s knit it, and what she did.

You know, it says ‘14 sts each [I]side[/I]’ so maybe you should end up with a total of 28 sts. If the pattern was done in magic loop, that would be 14 sts on each half. Or they may mean each side of the center. it’s really hard to say.
i got it ok in the pattern is says k2 purl to the last 2 st k2 i just did i and i still have 40 st on so i think i have to k2 k - k2tog k- k2 then k2 purl to the last 2 st k2 to get 14 st on the needle i think
