i found a new pattern for baby booties when a pattern says k17 Sl1 k2tog , psso turn what does that mean please help

You’re doing some shaping here. Knit 17 stitches, slip the next stitch from the left needle to the right needle without working it, knit the next two stitches together (decrease) and then take that slipped stitch and pull it over the k2tog and drop it off the needle. The whole thing is a double decrease.

ok so do i keep doing sl1 k2tog and psso to the end yes or no please help

from the line of your pattern that can not be told. It says there to knit 17 stitches, then do the double decrease.

what does your pattern continue like? I would not think that it keeps doing more of these decreases in a row.

The decrease lets you get rid of 2 stitches in the same spot, so the shaping would be very drastic if you kept going with it.

How many stitches do you have to beginn with? Knit 17, slip one, k2tog (psso) to me sounds like: 17 + 1 slipped, plus 2 that get knit together… that was 20 stitches before.

here is the pattern Use: Baby yarn or 3-ply sport yarn and #2, #3, #4, or #5 needles

* Cast on 31 stitches.
* Row 1, row 3, and row 5: P across.
* Row 2 and row 4: K across.
* Row 6: K17, Sl1, K2tog, PSSO, turn.
* Row 7: Sl1, P3, P3tog, turn.
* Row 8: Sl1, K3, Sl1, K2tog, PSSO, turn.
* Row 9: Sl1, P3, P3tog, turn.
* Row 10: Sl 1, K3, Sl1, K2tog, PSSO, turn.
* Row 11: Sl1, P3, P3tog, turn.
* Row 12: Sl1, K 11.
* Row 13 and row 15: P across.
* Row 14: K across.
* Alternate K and P for ten more rows.
* Cast off and sew seam.

your pattern wants you to do [B]short rows[/B].

there are videos explaining that really well, like this:

(on this page I only find short row with wrap, which is not what your pattern calls for).

so, basically, it wants you to work to that point, just turn your work around and work back to where you came from, mid row.
you do this as indicated in the pattern.
what happens is that you make one section of your knitting higher than the other. that can be one side, or the middle, or anything… you know?

your knitting takes shape by that and does not remain rectangular.

It would be easier to see if the knitting was on a flat surface and closer, not held up.

hey i finish one of the booties cant tell what is the heal or the toe and i don’t know how to sew the seam i need to know what seam stitch to use please help i am on the second one now

The cast off edge where it has the rows of K1, P1 ribbing will be around the baby’s ankle (it may be turned down in a cuff after it is sewn and in use). The sides you are holding in your hands in your last picture will make the back seam and the curled part at the bottom will be on the sole of the foot. I believe the little shaped part in the middle will house the toe. :slight_smile:

I think you will want to use mattress stitch to sew the seam. It may change a little as you go the whole length (I’m not sure) if the relationship of the stitches to each other changes. Here is a link to how to do mattress stitch on this site. LINK Scroll down to “Finishing” and select “mattress stitch”. This is a LINK to an on-line knitting book There are quite a few chapters on seams. See chapter 17, 18, 19 and you might need 21 if you have any of that type. I was going to share one more, but I keep trying to go there and it times out before it makes it.

The loop you end up with after binding off? Cut the yarn, pull it through the loop and weave in the end.
