I am going to (attempt) to knit a baby blanket. I’m kind of new to knitting and for the most part a baby blanket is not too difficult (i dont think) however i do have a question about width. and as far as cable needles go (for lots of stitches) how do I work the stitches? I have never tried it but i feel like it would be difficult or awkward. Also, i would like to do a 2 or 3 row border around the edges, how would i go about doing this on the sides? and one last one sorry if this seems like you have been reading for ages, can anyone offer suggestions on a stitch that would look nice for this sort of thing? thank you so much.
Hi Annie! I love knitting things on circular needles. When knitting with them, you knit just like you would on straight. When you’ve knit all the stitches you just change the needle from your left hand to your right, just like you would on straight needles. It is so not awkward or difficult, it may feel a little strange at first, but it feels alot better on your wrists in the long run.
If you want to add a border as you knit, just knit the first few rows of the blanket for garter stitch, then knit the first 3 or 4 stitches of every row!
Also, there are many free stitch patterns on the internet… but my favorite one that is so simple and looks super elegant is this
Row 1: knit all stitches
Row 2: k3[for border, if you like] then p all stitches to last 3, k3
Row 3: k3 [for border] k1,p1 til last 3, k3
Row 4: k3, p to last 3, k3
I love it on blankets!
Hope this helps,
Wicked
Knittingonthenet has stitch patterns and patterns for baby blankets. Also, lionbrand.com has both stitch patterns and baby blankets. (You need to be registered but quick and easy.) You might want to look at existing patterns to determine edge treatment. (That’s something that can also be added after the fact with crochet OR by picking up sts on a circ ndl). Looking at finished blanket patts may help you determine the look you prefer. (Some like lacy, some ppl want solid, some like stripes, etc.)
Knittingfool.com has a large selection of stitch patterns…many with pics so you can see what they look like.
And a ton of baby blanket patts at knittingpatterncentral.com.
Circ ndls are extremely easy and preferred by many over straights once you’ve tried them.
