Hello, all!
I’m designing a new hat pattern, & I thought I mostly had it down. I didn’t use stitch markers at all the first time I knit it, but now I’m double-checking my pattern & using markers just to be sure.

The hat has a zig-zag design & is knit from the bottom up. The instructions for the slant that is knit towards the right (at the bottom) are as follows:
k until 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm, kfb, […]
But now I’m checking the left-slanting part of the zig-zag, & this stitch marker placement doesn’t work:
k until 3 sts before marker, kfb, k1, ssk, sm, k, […]
By the time I performed this the second time, I didn’t have two stitches to knit the ssk with; my marker was in the way. If I move the marker AFTER the kfb in the right slant, I’ll just keep creating more stitches before the marker, making it useless. I sure hope this makes sense! I’m looking for a way to successfully knit both parts without it interfering with the stitch marker placement.
Haha, this is all so hard to explain – let me know if you need more clarification, & thanks for reading!

So these are the directions for two of the rows:
k until 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm, kfb, […]
k until 3 sts before marker, kfb, k1, ssk, sm, k, […]
Could you change the second row to:
k until 4 sts before marker, kfb, k1, ssk, sm, k, […]?
I’m not sure if this is doing what you want to do in the pattern. It certainly does look like a fun knit.
No reason why the directions can’t have the knitter remove and replace the marker, in order to get the correct st count/placement.
Slip 1, RM, return slipped st, PM, SSK.
Lovely, thanks so much for the help! All sorted!
Now it’s been figure out, I’ll add my comment. I use different colored stitch markers to remind me that I don’t do the same thing every time I come to a marker. I get confused easily so this might not matter to you or anyone else.
Will your pattern be made available to the rest of us? That would be really cool.
I’m hoping to have it up for sale through Ravelry & Etsy (no link available at the moment!) within the next month or so – I’m probably going to have a couple friends test it & I’d like to wrangle some models, too. I’ll come back & advertise once it’s ready.
Thanks for your comments!!
