Can anyone tell me the best way to attach a new ball of yarn to my project? I am knitting a cotton sweater and would like it to be as invisible as possible.

Well, there are several ways to do this and we may each have our favorites. There are a couple of methods here, about halfway down the page.
I like to overlap the two yarns for a stitch or two. I can’t see the joins when the piece is finished.

Yup, works for me too. Guess where I learned it. Right here! I’d just add that I use a stitch marker to remind me there is something different about those stitches, otherwise I sometimes forget and knit the two strands separately and get an increase or try to fix something that isn’t wrong in the first place. Of course, I have a very short attention span.
I try to change to the new yarn at the edge where it will be in a seam, but when that is not possible, you can make a braided join, lots of YouTube videos to show you how.
