Attaching a band to a cardigan

I have completed a pattern and do not understand the make up section. To make it up the neckband/button band is knitted lengthwise. The pattern does not say to bind off the 176 stitches but I assume you do. It then says to sew it using backstitch to right side of work. I cannot find any videos helping me with this, also do I attach the 1st row with cast on and or last (9th row) ending with a knit row and obviously a bind off. The pattern is the sixtine cardigan.

Welcome to KH!

Stunning lace and design on this cardigan. There are a couple of ways to do this, one at least that doesn’t involve binding off the sts. The join of front edge and live front band sts is knit.

You could also bind off and then use mattress stitch to join the band to the cardigan. You could attach either bind off or cast on edge whichever looks better to you using this method.

Either way it would be a good idea to pin the band in place as much as possible to make sure it fits into the length required without puckering or waving.

They want you to do what English speakers call “the Phildar method” (as that is where people saw it first).

Here is a blog post on it:

I’m afraid the blog post is very wordy. It’s not a difficult technique, just a little different, and it produces a nice finish.

I did find a video tutorial once, in French but it didn’t matter, but I can’t find it again now. I’ll just have a search and pop back if I find it.

Here is a video tutorial. It’s in French but it doesn’t make much difference. The bit you want to see starts about 3 minutes in!

The person doing the demonstration overlaps the band onto the garment a bit more than I would do.

You can also find an explanation in “The Big Book of Knitting” by Katharina Buss. Your local library may have a copy, or you can request it from another branch. Alternatively, a second-hand copy is good to have on your knitting bookshelf.

Another way to access it is by making a free account and “borrowing” it here:

Big book of knitting : Buss, Katharina : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming…

239 pages : 29 cm

In this edition, the technique you want is covered on pp. 70–72. The book shows facings/buttonbands and neckbands being backstitched on to a garment and has good photos and illustrations.

Thank you so much!
