Asperger's Follow-up. Now with knitting!

Thanks again to everyone who sent messages of support and offered recommendations on handling DS7’s issues at school. We had a good, productive meeting wth the staff this morning and

DS has been assigned a full-time paraprofessional to see him through til spring break, buying all of us more time to build a good, solid, useful IEP and BIP.

I was surprised to see the autism specialist’s excited, enthusiastic reaction to my suggestion of a paraprofessional. I heard after the meeting from a don’t-say-I-said-so-source that more than one person thought an aid would be ideal for DS, but that the school district doesn’t suggest them because of the expense. Once a parent asks, though, they have to by law consider it and give us a good reason other than staffing/money if they turn it down.

The knitting related part:

While we were waiting on everyone to arrive for the meeting, I pulled out socks I’m knitting for DS’s teacher Everyone’s eyes popped! At first it was the colors – the yarn is Lana Grossa’s Inca 528 http://www.awesomeewe.com/058.htm (colorway is in the second row, peacock and yellow) – then it was the 5 fearsome looking DPNs.

I’m so glad you’re off to a good start with your son! If, in the future, they want to give you a hard time, they know now that you come ‘armed.’ :wink:

:cheering: Fantastic news!!! Both for you and DS! I’m so proud when I hear about Mom’s sticking up for their kids!

And re: the knitting - yeah, haul your knitting bag with whenever you go to the school! Even if you don’t plan to knit, it really makes an impression! Even the Principal at my DS’s school knows about my knitting and always asks how it’s going. :wink: She tries to stay on my “good side”!!

Awesome! I’m so happy for you. Some schools don’t like to assign paraprofessionals because it is an expense, but it sounds like you’ve got a good cooperative school district! And it’s obvious you care very much and take your son’s education very seriously!

As for the socks, they probably want a pair!

Glad things are looking up! I worked years ago one-on-one with a little guy who was autistic. Most interesting and rewarding job I ever had. Now I am retired, but hang out with my neighbours’ two after school three days. 13 yr old son is in a wheelchair and as we watched olympic events one afternoon, and I worked on my sock knitting, he was jockeying his chair for a good position. I warned him that if he backed into and ran over my toes, I had pointy sticks handy. :wink: Then we both cracked up! I’ve also introduced him and his sister to the phrase “as soon as I finish this row”. They think that is hilarious too, but I was serious!!! samm who hopes your little guy gets all the assistance that he deserves at his school.
