Art Afghans?

I’ve seen art quilts at several wonderful art shows and quilting shows that I’ve been to. So that started me wondering… :shrug: Do people create art afghans (knit or crochet)? Do people knit (or crochet) pieces and sew them all together in art quilt format? Since I’m still beginner-ish, I wondered if this is happening and if so, can someone share links or pics of these afghans? :knitting:

I don’t have photos at the moment, but many years ago, I made an afghan in squares using the crochet’s afghan stitch - it’s comparable to the stockinette stitch in knitting - and then cross-stitched each square with something that meant a great deal to me at that time… mountains, trees, cooking pot, knitting needles, an open book for reading, flowers, birds, etc.

I still treasure that afghan. It’s a snippet of what it was like to be out on my own in the very early 1970’s and the first woman forest ranger in Maryland.

This is as close as I’ve ever gotten to an art afghan. It was done the way Dot says she did hers except mine was done in panels.

I think your afghan, knitpurlgirl is awesome!!! call it art. The link to the page of crocheted afghan/quilts is art to me. Other than pictures and statues which we are familiar with as art, I call anything made by hand a form of art. I have been to quilt shows and it was called art.

I doubt that many (if any) of these are afghan size, but this is the general idea that your post brought to mind. When I get a round tuit, I’m going to have a go at something like this in afghan (or bedspread) size.

I couldn’t get any text on the mysterious image in the post above. It’s an afghan by knitting artist Debbie New that plays with the idea of Granny Squares. The individual squares, which look abstract up close, meld into a photo-image of her grandmother! If you haven’t seen her book, Unexpected Knitting, prepare to have your mind blown with the woman’s creativity.
