I am doing the back of a sweater and the directions state.
Keeping cont of rib pat, bind off 4 sts beg next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each end of next 7 rows, [B]then every following alt row to 79 sts.[/B]
Okay, so I understand the first two, but do not understand the bolded part of the directions.
Question: If I bind off every following alt row, only one side will be shaped right? Because it will be the same row?
Please help.
The line right before that says to dec 1 stitch at each end of the rows for 7 rows, then do that every alt row. I think since you’re doing it at each end of every other row, it will still come out even.

Still confused - let me see if I have this straight.
Dec 1 st each end of next 7 rows, (which means I will decrease at the end of the next 7 rows - right?) [B]then every following alt row to 79 sts (okay, so if I do every alt row won’t it be the same row - for instance, rs - decrease 1 at the end, ws - pattern, rs - decrease 1 at the end). If I do that I think it will be one side decreasing. [/B]
I know I should trust the pattern, but I am scared!!

You’re always dec at both ends…meaning each edge (as pattern states: ‘at each end’). By doing them in ‘pairs’ your armholes should be the same.
Your BOs will be done on diff sides but then the decs are worked on the same side each time. Work a dec…work across…do a dec. Turn, work across…no decs. Repeat the dec row.
Like this:
RS: BO4
WS: BO4
RS: Dec at beginning, dec at end for 7 rows.
Then:
RS: Dec beginning, work, dec at end
WS: No decs
Rep last two rows.

THANK YOU, I messed up at dec at beginning and end. I thought since i was decreasing at the end of the row I didn’t have to at the beginning. DUH!!!

Each end means the beginning end and end end of the row. Or both ends…
