Armhole Decreases

I am knitting a sweater with a gauge of 20 stitches and 30 rows = 4 inches. The gauge is correct on the width BUT the length is 4.25". I have to begin decreasing when the back measures 19" long. I am afraid I am not going to get the right shaping for the armhole because the gauge is larger in length. Any ideas on how to adjust the decreases? Here are the instructions: Begin armhole shaping as follows: BO 9(11, 12) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side, every other row 9(10, 11) times.
Cont in St st until back meas 27 (28, 29)". Shape shoulders as follows: BO 6 sts (all sizes) at beg of next 2 rows. BO 6 (6, 7) sts at beg of next 2 rows. BO 7 sts (all sizes) at beg of
next 2 rows. BO 31 (35, 39) back neck sts.

Thanks in advance for any advise.

I’d let it be and follow the instructions. You’re already decreasing every other row, so there isn’t a lot of room for adjustment. I truly don’t think it’ll make much difference in the end.

It’s going to make about 0.15 inch difference or about 1/7 of an inch longer at your gauge. As Ingrid says, not much difference. I wish I came as close to the row gauge!

An inch is an inch so the overall length is what you measure, not the number of rows. For the shaping, you’ll be fine, after the BOs and decs then you measure the total overall length of the armhole for the shoulder shaping.
