Aran Pullover: Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1 1/2”, inc 1 st at end of last row–85 sts.

I’m trying to knit an Aran sweater but I’m having some trouble interpreting the pattern. I am relatively new to knitting any help would be appreciated!

My pattern says: “With No. 4 needles, cast on 84 sts. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 1 1/2”, inc 1 st at end of last row–85 sts."

I’ve cast on 84 stitches but I’m confused about the next part. Does it want me to work in K1, P1 to the cast on row or should I start a new one? Does it want me to do it for 1.5 inches or for 85 sts?

Okay actually I might have figured it out-cast on in this instance is not a single row, it is the inch and a half of ribbing before the pattern actually starts. Not 100% on how I get to 84 to 85 stitches there but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. Still any advice is appreciated

Welcome to KH!
The cast on is actually a single row, 84sts. For row 2 work in k1p1 rib across the 84sts. Keep working each row in k1p1 rib until the knitted piece from the cast on edge to the needles measure 1 1/2". Make an increase at the end of the last row of rib. Once you’ve made the increase the pattern is telling you there will be a total of 85sts on the needle.
In the video the knitter casts on using a long tail cast on. You can use your favorite cast on. She knits the rib for a certain number of rows whereas you will knit the rib for 1 1/2".

You can work the increase on the next to last knit stitch using a knit front and back if you wish.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it
