Applied cord edgings

Is there a way to stop straight edges from bunching up when applying a cord to the straight edges of a project? I’m using 4 ply yarn and 2 mm needles for both the main piece and cord edging.
Would knitting the cord for a few rounds without picking up a stitch help? I’ve done that for the corners, which are square, and they look much better than my first attempt where they turned into curves, which I didn’t want.

Sure, that sounds like a good idea. When I knit integral garter stitch button bands on a stockinette sweater front, I put in an extra 2 garter rows every now and then to keep the band from pulling at the body of the sweater.

Thank you, salmonmac!
