My son and his friend were playing outside with our dog and they found this snake. I googled around a bit but didn’t find anything it matched perfectly…so was wondering if you guys could tell me what type it is :oo:
I showed the picture to my husband he thinks it might be a timber rattler snake, if it has the rattle on the tail. He couldn’t see if it did.
Now if it doesn’t than oops he could be wrong

I don’t think that I would have the kids play with it until you know for sure what type of snake it is. hopefully it will just slither away and not be anything dangerous.

It’s a corn snake (non poisonous) eats vermin (rats mice n such).

It’s ok they’re good to have in the yard or barn. Just remind the kids that if they leave the snake alone the snake will leave them alone.

The one thing that made it odd was it tried to coil up and rattle the tail…but it didn’t have a rattle…it does look like the corn snake photo…I called my n’bor and he didn’t know what it was…sent a picture to my dh and mom through e-mail 
fear of heading towards the kids/dogs/cats might have caused someone to freak and it was taken care of for her…so she wouldn’t worry…but I wanted to know what it was in case there is more :oo:

Glad that it is not dangerous to anyone. Now that you say that my daughter-in-law’s son has a corn snake. I haven’t seen it because I really hate snakes. I freeze up and can’t move, :passedout: So I don’t really go out into the tall grass down where we live. We do have cottonmouth snakes. :thud:Do take care with snakes.

My son has a corn snake. When she doesn’t want to go back in her terrarium she vibrates like a rattle snake. Just a snakes way of saying “I’m pissed leave me alone”

I’m the same way with snakes and spiders…I usually hide in the house while JD handles them, but couldn’t do that today (he is at work)…so thankfully the n’bor come to my aid
I did go ahead and send the photo to our local veterinarian 'cause the list for our state snakes doesn’t list corn snakes…but maybe that’s how come no one around here knows what it is…we are not suppose to have them
Probably a bull snake, they pretend to be rattle snakes.

Behavior and location are important in ID.
If you want to say where you’re from I could go dig out a book to see what’s where, but bull snakes are very common and the behavior is correct.

Hiya again, it’s just me.
I found the wiki page on these snakes n they are very popular as pet snakes. Could be that it’s an escapee from someones house in the neighborhood.
I don’t think it’s a buzztail or a bull snake (we have those round here all the time, hubby used to put bull snakes n buzz tails together in a horse tank n see who came out the winner) Corn snakes or as they’re called round here rat snakes are pretty n lot’s of peeps have em for pets.
My sis, who lives south of town here, has to always be on the lookout for buzztails, she has to watch where she steps before she gets out of the car n also to keep n eye on the porch to make sure one isn’t hiding there.
O, BTW, buzztails is slang round here for rattlesnakes.

That’s a good bet. They’re everywhere but the extreme north and northern half of the rockies.
Bull snake isn’t likely to be in Ohio.

My book shows corn and rat as different species.
Corn isn’t there but rat is (and their picture of the grey subspecies looks a lot like the picture).
Fox is a subspecies of Corn and could be in parts of Ohio.
Milk is a different species and would definitely be there.
I agree that it’s a corn snake. And that it’s not unusual for a nonvenomous snake to rattle its tail when agitated…in fact, a gray racer scared me half to death one time rattling its taill like that–it was lying amid some dry brush and the vibrating tail made the dry twigs rattle like a rattelsnake! (Large nonpoisonous snakes will bite if grabbed tho’–they may not have poison, but they still do have small sharp teeth that will just barely break the skin.)
BTW, if you look at the photo you posted I can give you a hint for IDing venomous snakes. You notice how the snakes head joins the neck very smoothly? A venomous snake has 2 large poison glands, 1 behind each jaw. It gives the head a heavy triangular shape. You can tell EXACTLY where a poisonous snakes head stops and the neck starts.

Definitely a young corn snake. I’ve seen many of them over the years.

Interesting. discussion. I could not identify it readily but from what I remember about snakes I agree with the corn snake crowd.
I think he is pretty. I like snakes and find them interesting to watch if I know they aren’t poisonous. All we get around here are garter snakes. They slither around so fast they always totally startle me. Once I realize what it is it’s long gone under the bushes where I can’t see it.
