I got this question emailed to me, and I thought maybe one of y’all would know. Perhaps any article that mentions KH would be just the thing? I’m curious to read such an article myself! I’ll tell Kim to watch this thread for suggestions. TIA. :wink:

Hope that you can help me. I am currently taking a computer class and need to write a paper from an article about how computers have influenced our lives. I am a knitter and have learned so much about knitting and how to knit from your site. Thank you! I’m wondering if you can tell me if there is an article out there about you and your site and how on line knitting has helped so many. I have done a pretty extensive search and can’t find any articles discussing computers/online info and knitting. Do you know of any?? If so, can you give me the source or attach a copy of the article.

I bet she could get a whole bunch of anecdotal data directly from KH members. Why go through a secondary source when you can hear it right from the horse’s mouth, you know? I for one wouldn’t be the avid knitter I am today if it weren’t for your videos and the amazing support from forum members. (Thanks again to Amy and everyone else!) KH rules! :woohoo:

A survey’s a great idea! You can make graphs and pie charts and your paper will look really spiffy.

In Stitch 'n Bitch there is a section about online knitting communities, websites, etc.

Not sure if this would help, but there are online programs that you can use to calculate how much yarn you need for socks and sweaters, and how big to make them and stuff

ANother idea would be to look in all the charity knitting groups. Word travels quickly online, and there are now a lot of homeless people, Iraq soldiers, and puppies in the pound that are toasty warm.

One of the recent knitting mags published an article about online resources (KH wasn’t included :-x ). I’ll see if I can find which one.

Knitty.com is my 2nd most favorite site (KH is 1st of course)… I went to their archives and searched for “online” and got 10 pages of links. Here were 3 from just the first page that appeared to be relevant to Kim’s request:

http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring04/FEATbreakingaway.html (this discusses expanding knitting skills and outlines ways to do that including using online magazines (like Knitty), weblogs, knitting groups, and message boards (like KH)).

I wish all these sources had been available to me when I was working on my degree. Despite the fact that I love libraries and books, finding just the right material was very difficult, and I spent more time trying to find info than I did writing up the papers for my classes.

It would be great if you did the “voting thing” or set up a forum (subject) for the research for your computer class…

I can’t think of an article about computers specifically infulencing knitting. Though I recall one related to a web site connecting readers.

If she reads the opening intro to Mason Dixon Knitting it discusses how the two authors met on another knitting forum, later developed there own blog and of course later the book. If not for the computer world of forums they may not have ever met or published sucha book and in turn inspired thousands of knitters.

I’m sure there are other examples of peeple meeting on knitting forums. This site has helped thousands learn to knit, including me. So for such an report she may just have to site these many examples rather than rely on specific articles.
