Anyone knit this clapotis?

So I’m finally jumping on the bandwagon and knitting the clapotis from the knitty.com site. Here’s the link to refersh everyone’s memory: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/PATTclapotis.html .

Anyhoo, so I look up the yarn - Lorna’s Laces - and realize I can’t justify such a splurge. I know it only asks for 3 skeins, but I’m a $5/skein kinda gal: anything above $5 and I start shivering with anxiety.

Anyhow, the yarn is a 50% wool/50% silk blend and I love how it seems to drape. I also love the variegated look of the FO. So is there a less expensive alternative to this yarn that wll provide a similar drape and colorway?

Thanks, guys!

I know a few people on here have done it–one was with Karaoke, I think, though that’s not much cheaper! Maybe check on the Whatcha Knitting board?

I was thinking of making one with WOTA natural and dyeing it verigated with Kool aid. Or maybe wool ease natural of that fisherman’s wool. Hell I might even find a ugly cable sweater at good will, unravel it and dye that. There’s lots of alternative out there. Use the force and you will find them

I’m currently about a third of the way done, and I’m doing it in Malabrigo, an amazing merino wool. It’s a really lovely pattern.

Lots of people make it in lots of different yarns. I even saw one made out of lace-weight yarn. Before I found the Malabrigo, I was considering just getting a few different colors of a yarn I liked and making it striped. Solid colored yarn is cheaper, and it would have a similar look to the varigated yarn.

I made my clapotis from Karaoke, which was wonderful to work with, but expensive- especially when you need 7 balls of it!! I collected my yarn over the course of several months, which made it seem less painful. I think that the clapotis pattern is so cool, so many different yarns would look great.

do a google image search for clapotis

you will find them made out of every yarn imaginable so you can see the options
