“Keep 5 sts @ each edge outside markers in garter st for slit edges and cont in Stripe Pat on sts between markers for approx 5”, ending on pat Row 16. Slit edge is completed;therefore remove markers."
my grandma doesnt understand what slit edges mean, or what to do with them.
If you look at the picture of the sweater in the following link you’ll see that the side seams don’t go all the way to the hem, but stop short creating short flaps, a bit like a medieval tabard. These are the slit edges.
As to what your Grandma should do with them? I suspect, at the moment, nothing. Later on there will likely be further instructions in the ‘Making Up’ or ‘Completing’ section of the pattern.
thanks for your reply shes having trouble with the pattern. in the picture from the bottom of sweater it looks like theres a band then a space than 1 line then a space than 3 lines and it continues on. she keeps knitting only 2 lines where it looks like 3. how many lines is there?
thanks
I think that if you keep to the stripe pattern, you’ll come out with the alternating stockinette and garter pattern.
Rows 1-4 are stockinette, rows 5,6, are knit to give you a garter st rib and then rows 7-10 are back to stockinette stitch
It might be easier to write out the rows in order:
row 1 K
row 2 P
row 3 K
row 4 P
row 5 K
row 6 K etc.
Julie is spot on about the slit edges. The directions for finishing have you sew the side seams so that the lower 5 inches are unseamed. This makes the slip opening at the lower edge.
