ok so. you all know I made a cowl so I was looking for a hat i can make so I can use my yarn. So I measured the gauge from Cowl and got 2.5 st in an inch with 8mm needles. Hat patt says 3 st in 1 inch on 8mm…can I get away with that 1/2 stitch? do I have to go down a needle size?
Depends on the hat pattern. When asking questions ALWAYS post the name and a link if you have it.
You may be able to just cast on less stitches or knit a smaller size. If it’s ribbed it’ll probably still fit because ribbing stretches so much.
oh yeah…oops. Sorry Jan. its this one Chunky Slouch Cap
Nice hat! Since your gauge is bigger maybe just knitting the smaller size would work. I’m not positive it will be right, but you can always use a smaller needle and see if that works instead.
My sister thinks I should knit a proper swatch. but surely the st st part of my Cowl could be used as a swatch anyway. OMG I just measured my head and Its def the bigger size. lol
Since you get 2.5 sts/inch, you could divide the smaller size cast on number of sts by 2.5 to see if the inches on the smaller size directions will give you the larger size. The half a stitch/inch gauge difference could knit up quickly to a much bigger hat than you intended.
If you’ve already done this, please pretend that I said nothing.
