Another Copyright Question

I’m working on something that is taken from an old Columbia Minerva pattern book. This is a mitten pattern for babies. I’m using the pattern for a different purpose…not even a clothing item. Am wondering if I can copyright this pattern for my particular use? Actually, the pattern is so simple, I don’t see how it can be copyrighted at all. I can remember it in my head, LOL.

Sorry - I don’t know the answer… but …

*bump  Surely, someone does.

When you say pattern, do you mean stitch pattern? Or a motif?

The current Vogue Knitting has a pretty comprehensive article on knitting and copyrights. There are a lot of gray areas, but I’d recommend getting the magazine.

Guess I’m not really sure. Can’t say it’s a motif. It’s just so basic, that it probably is in the public domain. I’ve visited the government websites on copyrights and patents. My eyes kind of glaze over when trying to understand it all. May just take my chances and put the pattern in Pattern Central when I’ve finished my project. I just don’t want to be sued for what little I have. It would be kind of nice to be paid a little something each time the pattern is passed along…supplement our retirement income.

Yep - I just bought my copy yesterday. The article is pretty good!
