Annieruth

I used Noro silk garden to felt a beret. It took forever to felt and it is still not tight enough around the head. Do I keep felting or chalk it up that it will be a little loose?

Okay, Annieruth, everything I’m reading shows that yarn as having about 55% animal fiber and 45% silk, so it’s not gonna felt like 100%. Which leads to my question… How long is forever??? (:teehee:)

You might be able to felt it longer and it might shrink a little more BUT you might have to find a larger-headed friend, too! You can purchase some elastic thread and weave it around the part that’s too loose. Hope this helps. Don’t give up! Mary

I didn’t realize my “wool” wasn’t 100% after I looked at the label. I accidentally picked up the wrong one in the stash at the knit shop. I will get the elastic thread and try to tighten it. Thanks for the advise.

Oh yeah, I thought of something else you can do… Before it dries, find a stiff/sturdy form with the exact or close size of your head… I use a high density foam and make it into the shape and size of the object. The foam allows me to pin the bag to it. I have done it with hats, too. Even shredded foam in a pillowcase will work as long as it simulates the shape and size. Alot of times, when making bags, the top will flare out when I don’t want it to and using the foam, I actually ease the felted item around the form, pinning close together. I kinda looks gathered on the form. When it dries, the flare will usually shrink to the pinned measurement.

Yeah some of it will never felt because silk won’t felt. The rest should felt though but there will be some texture to it and of course it will be looser since it isn’t shrinking in as much as it would if it were an animal fiber. :wall:

thanks for the info!!
