Since I FINALLY finished the pink baby afghan, I figure it’s a good idea to make a matching bonnet.
I found a pattern, but it’s not working! Bummer! Whoever designed it didn’t work out the stitches, so I’m still looking for a feather and fan pattern that will work.
I’ll be using the same yarn, so I think it would be a pretty set.
Can’t wait to see the FO! That yarn is gorgeous!

I’m sure I could help you. I’ve made more hats from that basic pattern than I can count.
Mostly my own variations. I once had a 5# baby in the winter. Hats were a real problem, so I got creative with the pattern.

When you do the 3rd row in the Feather and Fan design, you end up with almost 80 stitches instead of 62. It grows!..and it shouldn’t.
I think I’ve worked out a corrected design. I’m going to try it, then I’ll see if I can email it to them.

and then another row which decreases the number back to what you started with.

You could see if the amount of sts in the repeat of the directions for blanket, fit into the number of sts after the crown.[/color]
Yes, I’ve seen that before.
But, they don’t supply a decrease row. They tell you to repeat the feather and fan pattern for 8 rows, so by the time I’d be done with that, I would have almost 200 stitches! I KNOW that’s too much for a baby’s head. :lol:

Just a suggestion: Make a bow at the end of two ribbons and sew them securely to the corners of the bonnet.
Also, I don’t know that you need to do that neckband. Form the picture, it looks like it would fit oddly.[/color]
I’ll try that one too. I think they also listed the K1, YO wrong. I think it should be YO, K1.
Here is what I’ve come up with after working with some graph paper.
Cast on 60 stitches (instead of 62)
Row 3: K6, K2tog 2 times, (YO,K1) 4 times
*K2tog 4 times, (YO,K1) 4 times - repeat from * 2 more times
K2tog 2 times, K6
I also had to change the neckband a bit since the stitches are lower in number.
I just tried doing the first part of the pattern, and my plan keeps the stitches at 60, so I’m hoping it will work.
Do you happen to know of a different “feather and fan” bonnet pattern?
[color=blue]For a bonnet, I think a pattern with 4 YOs is better looking than 6 YOs.
I didn’t look to see what the guage was with 4 ply yarn. Does your’s match.
With 60 sts you could do another section of pattern, and not have 6 sts in garter st at either end.
Do it on 62 sts and have just 1 extra garter st at either end, and then you will have the number of sts you’ll need for the crown.[/color]

The Feather and Fan Bonnet is finished!
After much consternation, and counting stitches on a piece of graph paper in order to fix the problem with the pattern, I started knitting and discovered to my amazement, that I got it right!
Yippee! The only thing I don’t like is the back of the bonnet. It looks like a cone! Oh well, at least now I know what to fix if I make another one.
Here’s my corrected pattern:

Materials: Knitting worsted weight yarn - approx 2 ozs
US #6 straight needles
US #6, 16” circular needles
Gauge: 10 or 11 sts = 2"
Size: Newborn to 6 months
Directions:
Top of bonnet
Using straight needles, cast on 60 stitches.
Knit 2 rows.
[b]Feather and Fan pattern:
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: K6 (garter st. border)
K2tog 2 times, (YO, K1) 4 times,
K2tog 4 times, (YO. K1) 4 times - Repeat from * 2 times
K2tog 2 times, K6 (garter st border)
Row 4: Knit.[/b]
Repeat these 4 rows 8 more times.
Back
Row1: *K8 K2tog, repeat from *
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: *K7 K2tog, repeat from *
Row 4: Purl
Row 5:*K6 K2tog, repeat from *
Row 6: Purl
Continue in this manner until you K2tog across the row. (6 sts remaining) Break yarn, thread through stitches and tighten to close. Sew crown seam.
Neck Band
Using small circular needle, pick up and knit 38 sts around bottom of bonnet – 19 stitches from each side of center seam. Do NOT join.
Knit 3 rows back and forth (garter stitch)
(Eyelet row) K1 *YO K2tog, repeat from * to last stitch, YO K1
Knit 3 more rows and cast off very loosely. (I use a larger needle)
Run pretty ribbon through eyelet holes and tie to close.
(Not too tight or you’ll choke the baby!)
I’ll be taking the bonnet and afghan to the baby’s mother this weekend. Hopefully, I’ll get a photo of the actual baby wearing it! I can’t wait to hold her!
Here’s my sweet husband. He’s holding his new grand-daughter, and she’s wearing the bonnet I knit for her! I also made the blanket. It makes such a nice set!
Awwww how adorable!! She looks so cute in your bonnet and blanket! 
She is so precious. My husband and his kids all went to eat lunch yesterday, and left me to watch the baby. I really enjoyed that time with her. She was a little fussy at first, so I pulled out the old lullabies I used to sing to my boys. She stopped crying and just stared at me while I was singing. She soon fell asleep in my arms. What a baby doll.
