Altering a top down jumper when its almost finished

I have almost finished a jumper for my adult son in top down in the round style which I have used several times before. BUT I cut off the neckband to lengthen/raise the neck line rethreaded stitches onto the needle and then noticed a mistake I had made about four rows lower - I think where I have turned on a G short row. So I decided to unpick down to that row but I now realise the difficulty in reknitting that G short row as well as the raglan stitches S1L and S1R. Now of course I am working up the jumper. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Helen (Australia)

Hi and welcome. I knit top down and do short rows for back neck and other shaping. I think you mean German short rows (my preferred method) but I don’t know what S1L and S1R mean.

I might … might… consider reknitting the neckline then down to just below where the problems are and then grafting the new piece to the rest. Could you share photos of the work please. That could be helpful to understanding what’s going on. I think that knitting in the opposite direction could well present more problems than it solves.

Hi Grumpy Gran

Thanks for responding to my cry for help. I have taken a photo and tried to attach but I don’t think it worked. The m1R and m1L are the sloping increase stitches at the raglan.

OK. M1 L and R I know. For uploading a photo - I don’t know how things work if you’re replying via email as it seems you are. Signed into the forum I see an icon that looks like a picture at the top of the reply box. Clicking on that opens a popup that lets you upload a photo. I was hoping someone else would have a better suggestion for you to consider.

Welcome to the forum!
What is the name of your pattern?
You can reasonable knit up from the loops that you currently have on the needle. Use k2tog and ssk to replace the Make ones and check to make sure you’re getting the correct slant in each case. They will look slightly different but that will be part of the design.

GG’s idea of grafting is also a good possibility and it avoids having to substitute for the Make ones. You can more easily add in the missing GSR (German Short Rows).
Here’s one of the many videos online for grafting assuming that you’re using stockinette stitch in your project.

Thank you very much for your suggestions and Youtube lessons. They were excellent and I have learnt a lot. I will give the grafting and embedding suggestions a try - maybe on a test piece. They look like you would barely know where the garment is altered. I am impressed.

Good luck with it! Grafting works very nicely especially in stockinette stitch. If the grafting row is too tight or too loose you can always go back with a tapestry needle or small dpn and tighten or loosen the sts before weaving in the ends.
