Already messing up

I am sorry to ask so many questions, but I am trying to do a Continental cast-on, using the video on this site. The first 3-5 stitches look fine, but then each stitch becomes progressively looser at the bottom and looks awful. There doesn’t seem to be a way to tighten it.

I just tried again and am making it a tight as I can. Not sure if I should be doing this or not. I get a few more stitches that look good that way ut they are starting to get loose at the bottom again.

Does anyone know what I am talking about? Maybe I should just find someone to teach me, LOL!

As with everything else in life, the more you do it, the better you get. Don’t expect it to be perfect in the beginning. As you’re casting on, keep the stitches close to the tip of the needle and don’t let them spread too far apart. If some of the stitches look a little wonky, that’s ok. Just finish casting on and start knitting. Consider it a trial run.

Took me forever to learn to cast on! Just go slow. Really.
There is no rule that says casting on should be a fast process.
Make every loop as slow as you can so you can see how you are forming the loop as you go. Tensioning will come with practice

TY both! It’s going much better now, but I am still having to pull the yarn as taught as possible. Is that how it’s done? Seems like I shouldn’t be pulling so hard???

I snug up each stitch when I cast on, but I’m afraid if you do it too tightly you won’t be able to knit into your cast on.

Usually when I cast on, I always make it too tight, then I can’t knit into it! So what I do is a take a size 3 needle and I place it under the needle that I’m casting on to, and then I cast on both of them. Then, when I’m done, I simply slide out the size 3 and start knitting! Don’t know if that helps, but it helped me!

Thanks again! It looks much better now. I also tried to do the knit stitch but again got very frustrated. I think I’ll quit for the night and try again tomorrow  I think I’m gonna’ like this…

You can do it–just be patient! And yes, you are going to like this…you’ll LOVE this!

I started knitting May of last year and I remember feeling discouraged. I would go back and forth with the videos on this site and a book my mom gave me. I must of ripped out my cast on a million times! You’ll get the hang of it…at least your keeping your stitches on your needles. Mine kept slipping off! Just wait, you’ll be casting on in your sleep in no time!
