My issues with JoAnn online have so far been with dealing with the website. Trying to search for what I want is a nightmare and then the ordering system doesn’t work like it should. I don’t expect to order from them again after reading what’s happened for your mom. The Auburn store is usually pretty good to go to. For a while trying to get a coupon to use was like pulling teeth but not so much anymore, most of the clerks will tell me if there’s one I can use.
I get these things asking me to take a survey and I do just so I can tell them how much the site sucks.
ETA Is referring to the person who runs the cash register a “clerk” narcissistic? Am I dating myself again? Oy!
if it’s a project where i can weave the ends in (thick garter stitch blanket, etc) then i just take the old and new yarns, knit them together for 5-7 stitches, and weave in ends later. this has been especially fun with a 3-strand blanket i’m working on - so many ends due to so many knots and bad yarn spots! but, you can’t tell there’s extra bulk because of my layered stitches, since the whole thing is bulky.
((ETA - i can’t russian join this blanket yarn because 2 of the strands are boucle. and are not cooperating well.))
otherwise, agreed, russian join for me, so far. it’s easy enough, it’s strong, it’s very nearly invisible.
knots in my socks, methinks not. i’m like ‘the princess and the pea’ with my footwear, so it better be comfortable.
1:50 for me joining the freaked out masses. unravel 4 rows - uh-uh. nope. oh no he di’n’t…
4:15 for me freaking out a 2nd time. and making protest signs.
i haven’t even knit it and already i’ve over-unraveled. i was thinking about it for a hoodie pattern instead of plain stockinette. time for plans b, c, z etc now.
Have you tried slip stitch colorwork? This Ribbon Stitch is nice.
Either the tuck stitch or ribbon stitch would be nice done in two colors that have less contrast like tan and brown, light gray and white, light blue and dark blue.
 I freaked you out. :woot: It’s been a good day. I think I’ll go to bed now.
I wonder why the tuck stitch has to be raveled before knitting into the stitch 4 rows below. Why not knit it then ravel the others above it out? The slip stitch pattern would be easy, it looks good in one color even.
I like the New Stitch a Day videos except…yeah, there’s always something…for his step 1, step 2, and so on. The others just say, this is the pattern row the others are just knits or purls.
Are you trying to say I should be nice to you? I’m rarely nice unless I’m mad at someone.
FYI I looked in my Rav library at a pattern I had saved, no download, and is now a pay-for-it, when I clicked on it it gave me the download button. Thought you’d like to know. It makes sense it would work that way, you don’t have to d/l right when you buy, I think. Can’t say for sure as I never actually bought one.
good to know - thanks! now i can stop immediately downloading so much stuff. my patterns folder might be digital but it’s still stretched wide and ready to burst.
Uh, yeah. Same here. I am pretty sure I hadn’t saved that one I tried to d/l to my 'puter, a search didn’t unearth it. I’ll try with another when the free offer has expired.
I’ve been wondering about library saves, too. I’ve been saving them in iBooks and the library so this is good to know in case my iPad self destructs. :teehee:
X, I’m going to ask you a personal question, please don’t be offended. I’m working on a pair of spiral rib tube sox. I’ve finished the toe increases and have begun working in rib. It stretches to about a 10" circumference. Do you, as a person of masculine persuasion having I expect average-ish feet, think this would work OK for a teenaged boy who wears about a men’s size 8 1/2 shoe? I’m pretty sure it would be too loose for my comfort. Please help me out here. TIA
PS: If you do help me out and you really want me to I will try to be nice to you for a while. :teehee:
My thinking: Anything saved to your Rav Library is yours. I have other patterns I got when they were free and if I clicked on them got the download popup. I can’t see why an actual download at the moment of acquisition should make a difference. But what do I know? Maybe there’s a way to keep track of whether the download was actually done.
but, i have big feet… men’s 13-14 depending on brand, and E wide if at all possible (even EE double-wide in some brands). so mine aren’t a good comparison.
but, you’re in luck, my parents are both right around a men’s 8.5-9 (my mom’s having grown with age, my dad’s having shrunk) their ball-of-foot and ankle circumferences are very similar, in the 9.5-9.75" range.
so if your sock stretches up to 10", you should be fine, with room for him grow. but i’d be more concerned with it being too loose. a man’s 8.5 shoe means a foot length of approx 10-10.25" and a ball-of-foot and ankle circumference of about 9.5". and that’s before any kind of negative ease. so if you’re wanting the average 10% n.e., i’d aim for about 9-9.25" length and 8.5-8.75" circumference.
Yeah, I think that helps. Thanks. The pattern I’m using as reference is here. On size 1 needles, stockinette, my gauge was in the range of 8-10 sts/in. I was done with increasing and switching to rib before I could get a more accurate gauge count. I got to looking at the toe of the sock and trying to see how it would fit on my foot and decided to bump up to my brand new sz. 1.5 Nova Platina needles. Any excuse will do. :teehee: The toe is just about long enough to reach the ball of my foot and it would now be a little looser than I would like, I like my sox snugger than most people do I guess. I don’t want them constantly stretched out on his feet. I think based on what you told me and my own observation that I might be OK with the larger needles. I should have a chance for him to check them out by the time they’d be at the ball of his foot. What’s the worst that could happen? A visit to the frog pond. I know the way there well.
I wear women’s 9 1/2 shoes and my foot is about 8 1/4" around at the widest part. OMG talk about sharing personal info!
I came across a way to start a circular cast on that doesn’t involve DPN. I’ll look for a link to post about it. I used the same method to start the toes on these and it works great. It’s kind of like starting a hat at the top. The tail pulled through the first round of stitches closes it up.
