I have just started knitting with DPNS and it doesn’t seem to be too bad, so I have started this project, and for the moment it’s going ok, but I’m stuck at the point where I have to start the thumb opening.
After knitting for 20 rows, the pattern says “thumb hole is knit back and forth, starting with WS row.
Row 1: Slip 1, purl accross
Row 2: Slip 1, knit across
Repeat last two rows 7 times, for a total of 14 rows”
!!!
I thought that knitting with DPNS you always knit in the right side??? so is the pattern telling me that I have to knit now in the wrong side?
And if i slip one each row, when i get to the point where i have to join the thumb opening at the top, will I need to add stitches?
i am completely lost, the bit I have done looks so cute but I don’t know how to continue! Any advice, please?
You don’t always have to knit in the round on dpns. The instructions are telling you to knit flat (not in the round) when they say to ‘knit back and forth’. Starting with a WS row you’ll slip 1 st and purl some number of sts then turn to the RS slip 1 st and knit.
You won’t have to add sts at the top of the thumb hole because you’re not decreasing sts, you’re just slipping the first st on each side. That st gets worked every other row.

I think I know what you mean… but I still don’t get how to change from knitting in the round with dpns to knitting in the flat (or knit back and forth)… do I have to change to straight needles to knit this bit and then change again to dpns?
Or can i knit in the flat with dpns?
You can knit back and forth on the dpns, however many you are using. Just put a marker so you remember where to turn the work. After a few rows, you’ll see the opening and it will tell you that it’s time to turn the work.
