I’ve had no problems. The last time I flew I carried a set of circs that happen to be resin with a plastic cable (from my Denise interchangeable set). But generally, they allow knitting needles, crochet hooks and small scissors (just recently added the scissors-but i recommend taking a blunt nosed one or a yarn cutter pendant). Your best option is to go online to the airline you are using and search under “restrictions” or special rules or whatever and browse what their policy is. Also, print that and have it with you so if someone at the airport says otherwise, you can back yourself up with the company rules!

i read somewhere else that it might help to carry a self-addressed stamped envelope so you can mail them to yourself, just in case.

altho mailing seems like a good idea…there are no more mail boxes at airports I belive…??? not terribly sure tho…something to do with bombs in em.

I’ve traveled internationally recently and had no problems in any direction. Safest bet would be plastic, bamboo, or resin needles. COming home from Canada, however, they did confiscated my needlepoint scissors even though the US allows them. From now on I travel with kid’s blunt end scissors. Bring the SASE just in case and chances are you won’t need it.

I just travelled by plane this weekend. You can travel with any kind of needle, and now you can take “sharp” scissors, just as long as they aren’t longer than 4 inches. I still take blunt scissors, but it’s good to know. I also warn the security people when I have needles and whatnot. I think they appreciate that (or maybe they don’t care at all…)

There is a whole discussion here about how to get around taking scissors on a plane.

One of the best ideas i saw was to take one of those letter openers that has a protected blade (picture on link above).

I just flew across the US with a needle set from my Boye interchangables in my carry-on and they didn’t say a word. And i was flying in and out of LAX which is pretty high security.

I also just flew and I took my needles that I wanted to use and I also took circs just in case. I was not bothered at all and everything went through just fine. I took united if that helps.

Funny you should ask… I’ve been researching the same topic for my trip to Hong Kong. I just DON’T want to mess with the Chinese government.

This is a link to TSA’s information, which will cover the domestic security. From what I can gather, bamboo would probably be best. Bring your best manners because the screeners have the ultimate say in the decision, but I think their focus is on bigger issues than knitting needles at this point.

Going through customs and security on the way back, I’ll go ahead and run a tapestry needle (plastic, of course) and yarn through any work in progress so that if they won’t let my needles through, I’m not losing my work.

I have a friend who flew to Mexico a month or so ago. She had no problems taking her needles on the plane going there— but coming home they wouldn’t allow her to have them.
