Afghan question

I have a lot of different yarns, usually just one ball or hank of each, that I have collected on trips with the family. I want to make an afghan using all of them and have decided to make squares and sew them together. The thing is, not all yarns are of the same weight. I can combine them and get them pretty close, but not exact. If the squares are the same size, will it be a problem sewing them together. And would it work if I decided to pick up stitches along the edge of a block to do a kind of modular thing.

Thanks!

I think it’s possible, as long as the squares are the same size. I don’t know about the modular thing though, picking up stitches. The number of stitches needing to be picked up for each yarn will probably be different, and a bit challenging to gauge. You would for sure need to make a thorough gauge swatch for each yarn to know exactly how many stitches/inch each one gets, BUT you’d have to do that using the squares method too.

Here’s an afghan I made with lots of diff yarns (stashbusting my acrylic). Altho acrylic I did block them which really helped and then crocheted them. Turned out great.

That is a fantastic afghan. I’m very inspired to try something similar!! You say you crocheted the squares together - did you do a particular edging on each of the squares when you knitted them to make the seaming easier?

You could do the squares in diagonal dishcloth style, or centre out squares, that way you are sure to get the same size. just stop increasing when you reach the desired size. 2 examples here

knitqueen, I slipped the edge sts. Being each sq had a diff no of rows I sometimes picked up each st with the sc but other times would do sc with a slip in between. Whatever looked visually the best and most balanced…AND afforded the correct amt of stretch.

Thanks for all the help. I had forgotten I asked this question - menopause moment I guess. Cam, that is exactly what I am trying to do. I hope mine will turn out as nicely as yours did.

beekudzu, I can relate to the meno thing. Good luck with your project. If I can help, just ask.

Thanks. When it comes time to join them all togehter, I know I will have questions.

There is a booklet by Leisure Arts called “Mix It Up!” that specifically chooses all different kinds of yarns combined in one afghan. I made one for my BIL & SIL last year for Xmas and LOVED it! I wasn’t able to find all the yarns called for in the pattern, but did my own substitutions and it came out wonderful. Basically what it tells you to do is switch back and forth from larger to smaller needles when working with the thicker and thinner yarns. What I ended up doing was just double the strands and using the same size needles when working with the thinner ones. Mine was made in strips - let me see if can find a pic of it - here it is:

That’s awesome:cheering:I am trying to figure out how to do the opposite…I have crochet squares and I want to put them together with knitting:knitting:sts…I finished off a crochet scarf in moss, now I am going try a blankie…:muah:

Thanks, cheley. Just curious…why do you want to knit tog crocheted sqs?
